CAMBERLEY LAWN TENNIS CLUB
NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY 2010
Compiled by Janice Alves de Sousa (janiceads@btinternet.com)
Dear Members,
The Committee would like to welcome you all to another season at Camberley and hope that the club will offer you the kind of tennis you are looking for, whether it is fun or more serious. We strive very hard to find the right balance between fielding competitive teams, playing socially and making sure the juniors have plenty of court space also. Please support as many events as you can – don’t forget it’s you who make the Club what it is.
We have great playing courts, all with floodlights, a lovely patio area overlooking the courts together with a recently refurbished clubhouse – all in a very pleasant setting.
We do ask you to continue to subscribe to British Tennis for two good reasons: firstly, you are eligible for a £5 discount on your club subscription and secondly, the more BT members we have, the more our Wimbledon ticket allocation is increased.
The Finals of the Open Tournament will take place again in September, and like last year, it will be run over a longer period to ensure that all matches can be played. The preliminary rounds will kick off in May. Please make sure you enter in good time; you will notice that the entry fee has been removed. The Vets Finals will take place in July.
We are planning to hold monthly American tournaments, and these will hopefully take place on the first Saturday of each month from May through to August, and to give everyone a chance of winning, we will run them on a handicap basis.
There are several new faces on the Committee this year. Geraldine Carter decided to step down as Treasurer, and Jez Filley has taken on this role. Geraldine still remains on the Committee with Mary State as General Members. Jill Lederer is replaced by Marilyn Dobbie as Ladies’ Captain, and Doug Wakefield is our Junior Representative. The full Committee list can be accessed via the web site, which is maintained by Dan Gough.
The box leagues, both singles and doubles have proved successful enough for another round to shortly commence.
The first social event of the year will be a Quiz, hosted by myself, on Wednesday, 14th April, with a Fish & Chip supper. Check out details of this via the web site or from the clubhouse noticeboard. The start of our playing season, with tea included, gets underway on Saturday, 10th April, so please come and enjoy the afternoon.
No final decision has been made about the annual Dinner Dance, usually held in January, but we will discuss and let you know what we decide.
Don’t forget that you can also help the Club’s funds by directing any purchases you make from Amazon through the Club web site; just go to www.camberleyltc.com, select the Amazon links, then shop in the normal way. The Club earns 5% commission for purchases made in this way.
As we continue to conduct most of our administration/general notification electronically, it is still very important that you let us have any new/change of e-mail address, and you can do this via our on-line management system. Obviously we shall continue to post notices up in the clubhouse as well.
Of course, not every one wants to be part of a team, and there are plenty of times for you to play, either in friendly pre-arranged fours or singles, or at club sessions. Check out court space and availability via the booking system.
Please note that both the Open & Veteran entry forms will be sent out under separate cover this year.
Here’s hoping for a long hot summer!
